Dear colleagues, friends and persons interested in audiology, welcome to the EFAS homepage!
As the new president of the European Federation of Audiology (term 2019 -2021) let me express my thanks to you for making EFAS not only the club of all audiological societies from Europe, but also the platform for getting the members from our diverse societies connected! By this webpage, the EFAS Workgroups, EFAS Projects, stipends, and - most importantly – the biannual EFAS Congress is brought to your attention.
During the excellent Lisbon meeting (May 2019) with more than 800 participants and a broad spectrum of presentations from clinics and science it became obvious again: Audiology is a multi-disciplinary science with strong foundations in technical (i.e., engineering, physics, computer science, biology and psychology), pedagogical, and medical audiology that are all strongly connected to advance the field in big steps. This multi-disciplinary view helped Europe to be leading the way in important fields in audiology (e.g., hearing devices, audiological diagnostic procedures and modelling). Even though hard work is hidden behind the research outcomes and best-practice procedures to maintain the high standards of audiology in Europe, this is also fun - as can be seen from the very friendly and open atmosphere prevailing at the EFAS Congresses. Convince yourselves during the upcoming congress in Sibenik, Croatia in 2021!
For my upcoming presidential period, I would like to
- guide EFAS to advance university education in audiology: EFAS will set standards based on the expertise from different disciplines in audiology involved in university education.
- help EFAS to establish Precision Audiology based on more and better clinical research data bases and machine learning methods: EFAS will promote the newest developments in rehabilitative audiology and diagnostics and to lead the way towards their effective application.
- support EFAS in moderating the convergence of hearing aids and cochlear implants: EFAS connects good clinical practice, science and multi-disciplinarity both in theory and practice to implement the respective best solutions from both worlds.
I am very much looking forward to the next two years and the various inputs from all EFAS member societies, and am proud to be able to serve EFAS on its mission to become the leading force in audiology in Europe and beyond!
Sincerely Birger Kollmeier
